With
a difficult 2015/16 season, Chelsea’s future for the Premier League might look
uncertain, but manager Jose Mourinho has at least put some fans’ worst fears to
rest by confirming that striker Diego Costa will remain at the club at least
until the end of his three year contract. Although he has yet to match his 20
goal season when he first joined the London club, Costa is still a firm
favourite with fans including Monsignor
Richard Madders and no doubt Chelsea would have noticed
his absence if he was to leave prematurely.
Earlier Doubts
Chelsea
signed 27 year old Diego Costa at the start of last season for £32 million, and
opened with a very successful season. However, given that he has only scored
four goals in this season, there have been question marks raised about his
future at the club, especially when it has been reported that he hinted at
going back to his former team, Atletico Madrid. The Brazilian born striker was
also clearly unhappy about being left on the substitution bench for the recent
game against Tottenham Hotspur – throwing his training bib at manager Mourinho
after it became apparent he would not get a chance to play.
Reassuring Fans
In
spite of the recent flare ups between Costa and his manager, Jose Mourinho has
released a statement in an effort to reassure fans that they have a positive
working relationship. Mourinho explicitly said that he can see his striker
remaining at Chelsea for the next three years (until the end of his contract)
and he has even addressed the remarks regarding a possible move to Atletico.
The
Chelsea boss explained that Diego Costa was only saying that in football ‘you
never know’. In reality, the striker still has many years to go in his
footballing career and it is not uncommon for players to make a return to old
clubs after all, Thierry
Henry was loaned to Arsenal in 2012 - his first
appearance at the Emirates Stadium since 2007.
Look to the Future
Hanging
precariously above the relegation zone, Chelsea has to put in a lot of work to
make a serious challenge for the title - at least with the confirmation that
Diego Costa is staying, the club can focus on training hard rather than the
future of one of their star players.
